Fear is immobilizing. It constricts, silences, panics, stagnates. Fear is part of the basic strategy of the Trump administration. They wield it as tool to persuade the public to close our borders to refugees, to expand military spending and force, to put up walls to keep the ‘bad people’ out, to bow to increasing surveillance, to discriminate, to keep oppressing and othering those perceived as different.

We the people, are greater than fear. And honestly, I’m simply fucking over it. I’ve lived my entire life in fear of this planet dying beneath our feet: of people, plants, and creatures being poisoned by big business and shit laws that put profit over people. I’ve had nightmares ever since I can remember of humanity being lost to nuclear war. My heart and soul have always been deeply connected to the realities of this world and the future that is being destroyed and stolen from all of us. In the age of information, we all know what is going down and how much is at stake.

So don’t try to fucking scare me or the people with threatening more war or terror from outside forces. Our country and what our corrupt government facilitates across the world and at home, is terror. Whether it’s ecological, political, economical, cultural, militarized, or whatever new form they can come up with, our own government is a face of terror. Maybe it always has been. I can certainly think of some good arguments there (the genocide of native people, slavery, war). And now they want to stop immigrants and refugees from coming to America? We think we can turn our backs on the war torn people of the middle east when we fucking started this mess?

I’m just over it. I’m over having fear used against us. We are all fucking terrified. And none of what this administration is trying to do is making anyone safer. It’s more like it is catapulting us right into the worst case scenario.

I propose that we revamp how we cope with fear, how we talk and think about fear, how we use fear on personal and collective levels. A good place to start is with the Empress. What path would she take in these times and in response to fear? Loving, sensual, and deeply connected to the planet, the empress teaches us to be fierce in the defense of what we love, who we are, what we live for, and those around us. She is the feminine force humanity has been sorely missing through this atrocious patriarchal era. She does not fight out of greed or selfish preservation. When she responds to fear, she transforms it into a reason to fight for love, for a nurturing and viable planet, for people and animals alike, for the right to create harmony and abundance for all.

Fear would not constrict her, but cause her to open her heart wider, to let more in so that she is able to include the diverse needs of the planet and people in her fight. The best reaction we can have to fear is coming together. This fight is not individual nor can it be. This is fight is for all of us. When you feel fear, remember to reach out and connect. Remember that this is the only way we can stop the forces that we fear. And when this administration tries to use fear to justify violent and catastrophic plans and actions, remember that walls, violence, and greed will never keep us safe. The only way towards the future we seek is through love, connection, and nurturing.

I say nurturing because it is through nurturing that we transform concern and love into action. I say nurturing because that is how healing is done. I say nurturing because that is what this planet and the people need.

This is getting much too long. I may have to turn this into a blog ;)

Blessed be my friends. Keep your hearts strong and your will brave.

Love to all.

Do you feel like something is missing? Is there a gnawing feeling of dissatisfaction in your life? Are you feeling anxious and not quite sure why? Or maybe you do have the answer, but it's a hard one to face?

These feelings come calling when it is time to make a change, to set out on a journey to find what it is that you're missing. They are the messengers of our soul, begging us to seek something different, to seek what will help us grow, to seek inspiration, to seek change, to seek our purpose, to seek parts of ourselves lost to time or shame. Most likely, you will find the answer deep within yourself. New experiences will open those internal doors wide to greater parts of who you truly are and wish to be.

Maybe you're afraid. Fear can't keep you from making a move or else it will overtake you and you will be lost to dissatisfaction for the rest of your life. It's not worth it. Maybe you already know what you have to do and it means there will be some loss. Whether that loss is comfort, other people's approval, or what you know: what you stand to gain is worth what you must leave behind. Trust me, if you're following your intuition and higher self, it always is worth it.

So let your masks fall away, allow your true colors to come shining through. Follow that call. Follow your authenticity. Let go of the past, spread your wings to catch those winds of change, and allow yourself to soar...

🦅

Blessed be. 💗

Our greatest potential is within the work of integration, balance, and alchemy. It’s all about finding the middle road that works best and locating the point of integration between different aspects of our personalities and souls: between our ego and our higher selves, between our will and our feelings, between our physicality and our minds. You know, that yin and yang wisdom. Immense creative power and movement are possible when we learn the balance between flow and discipline.

Temperance and the chariot are 2 of the 3 cards in the major arcana that represent a kind of victory. They are all denominators of 7 with 21 being the final victory, aka - the World: wholeness. Wholeness, being at one with ourselves and the universe, integrating our contradictions, allowing and accepting all of who we are and have the potential to become is the greatest victory of the tarot. Temperance and the chariot are celebratory steps along the way. One of movement, one of integration, both speak of balance.

Not an easy road to find, not always an easy road to follow, I know. As with all growth, it takes time and practice. Obviously, I am in need of some of that because Temperance just won’t leave me alone! The week before last, I mentioned that it was one of those cards that has yet to sink into what I like to call my deep wisdom. I understand it on an intellectual level, but I don’t feel its message in my bones quite yet. And maybe that is why she keeps grabbing for my attention. I hear you angel otter, I need to spend some time with you.

Off to the ocean I go.

Blessed be.

Wow. The star, temperance, and the emperor have been on repeat this week spanning across different decks! Friends, I think this is a very good omen for us. Especially with today’s draw and today’s eclipse/full moon/comet/magical night we have been blessed with in the midst of all of this chaos. We are being granted a chance to reconnect with our confidence: a return of our audacity to proudly be ourselves and express it.

We will overcome. That is the message I’m getting over all. We must not lose faith. We must not relent. We must persist (btw definitely check out @chaninicholas write up for today’s full moon - SO GOOD).

You see that rainbow over the darkness of the 6 of swords? That is us, rising above the lies, the deceit, the cheating, and corruption. That is us, choosing love, harmony, and truth. That is us, choosing to move beyond the bullshit, towards a progressive future. You see the rainbow reflected in the beauty of the star? That is us keeping faith in good, faith in love, faith in justice, faith in brighter futures, faith in new beginnings, and faith in one another. We will persist. We will overcome.

But that doesn’t mean it won’t be challenging. We know it’s going to be hard. But nothing worth having in this life comes easily. We have to be willing to struggle through this, to struggle for this. We have to be willing to make sacrifices now for the long-term goal — a viable and equal future for all (including mother earth!!).

Today/tonight, make sure you let the beautiful vibes of Leo in. Look at your shadows of fear and rejection as they are revealed through this eclipse. Face them and reintegrate them. Fill yourself up with self-love and acceptance. Fill up with confidence and the fiery will to express yourself passionately. Don’t hide behind your shadows. Overcome them. Again, we will persist and we will overcome. On both an individual and collective level, this is a time of bold transformations. This is a time of facing fears and going beyond them for the greater good. And none of us are alone.

The FULLEST of moon blessings to you all!

I’m off to the forest.

Blessed be.

The Star and the Emperor

Vulnerable and true. Hopeful and free. The star is a card of letting your true colors come through. She is the healing of the self that comes after going through the devil and the tower, after seeing and removing all of the bullshit pressure you and society have placed on your spirit to be and act in a way that is considered normal. After witnessing your false ties to convention, the journey of getting to know yourself from a place of authenticity begins. There is such gratifying freedom, even through the fear, of no longer serving at the feet of convention, of being unashamed of who you are and what you think.

And the emperor is here again to remind us to grant authority only to ourselves, to grant ourselves permission to be as freaky and weird as our hearts tell us we are and feel justified in it. This is closely tied to the lesson that came up earlier this week with the ace of pentacles and the emperor. This is about ownership and owning yourself.

With the Full Moon and eclipse going down in confident Leo, I want you all to think about the ways in which you allow your fears of what others will think to hold you back from being who you are. I want you to think of the ways in which you pressure yourself to conform to the norm. I want you to think about your internal relationship with authority, ownership, and structure. I want you to strip down to your very core and make a plan to allow your truest self to come forward, to care and share the depths of who you are.

And most importantly, I want you to find peace with yourself even if it is only for a moment — it’s called practice dear friends. I want you to accept, love, and hold your beautiful soul and know that you are wonderful even just as and where you are. Accept and love who you are now and I can promise that growing and developing into the person you truly want to be will be a much easier task.

Wishing you all self-love.

Blessed be.

Temperance, 7 of Swords, and the Cheetah

Look familiar? Last Friday I used this cloth and pulled the cheetah from the animal spirit deck, temperance and the 9 of wands from the spirit speak deck. Now we have the cheetah and temperance again, but this time with the 7 of swords and the motherpeace deck. Repetition is one powerful way the universe speaks to us.

As those in power continue to lie, to sneak around, trying to get away with atrocious policies, we will continue to move forward, pushing for balance and a well integrated democracy. By ‘well integrated’ I mean a democracy that stands for everyone’s rights. A democracy that is progressively intersectional.

This is the lesson of temperance as it can be applied to our government. I used to get lost in the idea that the balance this card called for was between democrats and republicans, but no. It is balance in the voices of the few and the many. It’s an intersectional outlook and a fair distribution of power, not a corporate coup full of billionaires and payed politicians to put corporate interests over the people.

I and the cheetah want to remind everyone to stay connected to your purpose. When you feel the darkness weighing upon you, remember that light comes from within you. Light comes from your passion, convictions, and moral compass. Light comes from fighting for justice. Light comes from banding together, answering the call to create a just and fair society in which our voices are heard and our planet is taken care of. For the good of all.

Sigh. I know it’s hard, I know it hurts. I know there will be days when you will simply feel defeated, deflated. And those are the times to think of the Cheetah and her unending light and strength. It comes from her heart, from keeping connected to why she is here. It comes from answering the call of your higher self.

Keep moving friends. Keep fighting. Stay grounded. Stay connected.

Gotta run, sorry for errors. #nodapl protest in Portland at noon, US Army Corps building.

Blessed be.

I’ve been struggling through the years with the concepts of ownership, structure, and authority. I came out of grad school swinging at all three. I was simply done with anyone and anything stifling the way I prefer to write, what I prefer to read, and even what I do with my days. I sincerely thought when I finished my degree that I’d finally be free. I thought the words would flow, that my creativity would come rushing back to me, that all I needed was the absence of an institution over my head. Instead, I travelled deeper into a long, dark night of the soul.

And thank goodness for that. What I didn’t realize, even if I understood the concept intellectually, was that the structures I felt the need to rebel against still existed within me. You know, that whole internalization of oppression thing… My internal predator, my ego, my demons, still clung to ideas that made me feel guilty and ashamed about the person my higher self was calling me to be. Conventionality still held power through conditioning, through shame, guilt, and doubt.

I had to set out on a journey of unfolding, dismantling, and seeing what was behind the old walls that kept me trapped. It has been a journey of unlearning, of facing those demons, of clearing away the unnecessary. And it’s been a long one.

What does this have to do with the Ace of Disks and the Emperor? After dismantling the old power structure, you have to build a new one for yourself. It’s taken me some time, but it is clear that I need to build new webs of internalized understanding when it comes to authority, structure, and ownership. I need to hand the reigns over to myself. I need to stand in my own authority. Create my own structure. Take ownership of all that I am and all that I seek to create. Especially now.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to look at your relationship to authority, ownership, and structure. Both inside and outside of yourself. Remember to grant these tools of empowerment to yourself, first and foremost. Especially when embarking on new projects, creative ventures, activism, work, etc. Just because it’s new to you does not mean you should feel disempowered or voiceless.

Blessed be.

Per usual, the lesson here is about balance and context. There are times when we need to play it safe, structure our days, save money, focus on our work, and/or hide our expression from the world until it’s finished. There are times when we have become selfishly and detrimentally invested in the material. There are times when we use structure to hide. And those are the times in which we need to give our attention and energy to our inner child: to express, play, and be joyful for its own sake.

It is far too often that we hold ourselves back when we should be letting our creativity and expression flow with child-like abandon.

Is it fear, greed, or comfort that keeps you from sharing your truths, your feelings, your work, your expression? Is it something else?

Are you trading your freedom for security?

Maybe you choose to seek satisfaction in your job, things, and/or bank account instead of through your joy, play, and creativity.

Maybe merging, sharing, and balancing where you find your satisfaction and value is exactly what is being called for.

Maybe clinging to structure is exactly what you need to channel your creativity forward.

Ask yourself, your higher self, what your goals are. What is most important to you? Make a list. Now, ask yourself what you need to get there. Is it more work? More structure? More play? More freedom? Make sure that you aren’t getting stuck in either extreme. It is possible to enjoy your work and make room for play within a structured environment. It is possible to lend structure to child-like abandon and joy.

I know it’s also hard for many of us to enjoy or even feel happiness right now, because we fear so much for our earthly and material well being. Between the suffering planet, violence in the world, economic instability, and personal health there is a lot to be worried about. For you, I wish you the freedom to feel into your joy when it erupts. I wish you the freedom to find time to reconnect to and cultivate it. I promise it won’t make anything worse. I promise that it will heal you in ways that you cannot imagine. The more joy you can let in, the more hopeful you can remain, the more strength you will find to fight for your rights for an inhabitable planet and a responsible government.

That being said, it’s okay to be angry and sad too. Stay connected with your emotions. Take care of your structures. We will get through this together.

Blessed be.

Temperance, the Cheetah, & 9 of Wands

February 3, 2017 Nicole Lock

My lovely friends,

I know there is a lot happening right now. There is a plethora of information, theories, opinions, worries, anxieties, fights, trials, etc., all begging for our attention. There are politics, people, careers, magic, art, creativity, and love to tend to. We must work out a way to find balance. Create a path that allows you to stay informed, prepared to fight when you are called, but also gives you the time to connect to why you care in the first place. We have to conserve our energy, while also keeping it aligned with our purpose, ready to defend our moral truths and rights. At the same time, we have to rest, to renew, to clear the unnecessary and keep our energy stores well stocked.

We also have to make time for loving one another. For our expression. For our magic. For our art. For our faith. For meditation. For cleansing. For self-care. For caring for others. These are the things that will fuel your fire, that will help you keep your energy stores at a functional, even powerful, level.

To create this alchemical concoction of balance, we need to spend some time with our friend Temperance, the angel of balance and synthesis. I don’t have a clear idea of what that looks like for you or even for myself. I know that there is a way, through careful consideration, to find compromise between all that is pulling at us. I know trying to remain grounded, balanced, and connected to your deeper purpose is a good place to start.

Temperance has yet to sink into the deeper wells of my understanding. I have yet to relate to it or conceptualize it in such a way that it becomes a solid part of my foundational wisdom. Readers, you know what I mean? Maybe balance and alchemy are something of a challenge for me. Compromise between extremes seems like an impossibility these days. It’s like balancing good and evil when I think it’s time for good, period.

Take care of yourselves. Tend to your internal flames. We will need them to burn long-term. Here is to hoping we have a good weekend!

Blessed be.

10 of Blooms & the Tower

Yesterday, I was raging. Today, I am ecstatic.

Turbulent times make for tumultuous emotions. There are many reasons to grieve, to be angry, to be excited, to be joyful, to be heartbroken, to be and feel any damn emotion right now. We are waking the fuck up and that is exciting. We are FINALLY being forced to take an honest look at the corruption, racism, sexism, and xenophobia this country has always been famous for. It’s terrifying to face and atrocious to watch as the current administration wields the crimes of this country like they are justified policies. It’s disheartening that it had to come down to such devastating extremes (and we have yet to see how far these extremes will go) for us to make change, for us to come together, but it is the way of the universe sometimes and it is the way of the tower.

I can think of no other card that would describe what we are seeing in the US better than the tower. This country was built on a fucked up foundation and Trump (and the people behind and around him) is our lightning bolt of truth. Through these times of uncertainty, remember that this was probably necessary (that doesn’t mean that I think it is in anyway okay or normal or anything other than devastating and terrifying).

We are here now friends. And through solidarity, creativity, resistance, and collective action I believe we are going to use this fight to make the world a better place. An actual better place, for the planet and all people (well maybe not the rich white assholes). This is the age of information. This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius! Let’s fix ourselves now. Let’s be a part of human evolution in the direction of love and harmony, not greed. Look at that lotus, look at that rainbow in the 10 of cups. We will rise through the muck, we will come to the light. We will respect, love, and support diversity and harmony.

It is what most of us want.

Today, I just know it. I feel it in my bones. Have faith. Have heart.

It is better to suffer and sacrifice in the fight for justice, than to turn your back on the suffering injustice has created. I think we know that. And that makes me happy.

Blessed be.

8 of Pentacles & Queen of Cups: Calling Healers & Feelers to Get to Work!

February 1, 2017 Nicole Lock

My dear friends, let’s teach and show the world how to love, connect with, and take care of the earth. Let us remind people that the true path to happiness has nothing to do with money and things. Let us teach those who do not know how to hold the world in wonder and have empathy for people, for plants, for animals, for water.

May we keep facing the shadow of our country and the world. May we come together in love and support to heal our collective wounds. May we remind the world the cyclical nature of our planet. May we engage the hearts of the masses in collective compassion for those suffering in the world.

Let’s kick apathy out of the public consciousness, let’s cure the finite pool of worry with collective change. Change on the spiritual, cultural, and psychological level.

We have to get to work for compassion and love. We have to hone our skills so that we are able to carve a better future for us all in the name of compassion and love. I keep thinking of the quote going around from the environmental lawyer, Gus Speth: “I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy… And to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation - and we scientists don’t know how to do that.”

But WE do. Artists, spiritual practitioners, healers, social scientists, etc., have always known that this was the case: that the only way to stop climate change is through dismantling our culture of consumerism and corruption. It seems that a lot of people are hoping that science and technology will save us. It won’t. We have to change the way the masses see the world, the way the media reports it, the way we have been ideologically conditioned to think about it. The fact that it took a lawyer/scientist to validate this fact for me, to believe in it, proves how true this is.

It may be a daunting task, but we can do it. We are awakening. Healers & feelers, let us come together to show the way of compassion, conservation, harmony, and justice.

Knight of Cups & King of Swords

January 31, 2017 Nicole Lock

What a powerful person these two make, if we can learn to combine their positive aspects together. The dreamy, creative, spiritual depths of the Knight of Cups can be brought to the surface through the intellectual, honest, and authoritative nature of the King of Swords. This means, bringing what is in your heart to the page. This means, bringing what creative ideas live in your unconscious to life through putting your mind to the task. This means, finding the confidence to believe in your own truth, creativity, and the value of your art.

This draw is asking you to give authority, voice, and trust to your creative or spiritual work, whatever that may look like. Whether you are painting, writing, speaking, building, analyzing, protesting, whatever… believe in your own ability and allow yourself to own it. Don’t be afraid to sound too confident, to be too authoritative. Don’t be afraid to stand behind what lives in the depths of your creative soul and share it with the world.

In the words of the wonderful Terry Tempest Williams, “to write requires an ego, a belief that what you say matters. Writing also requires an aching curiosity leading you to discover, uncover, what is gnawing at your bones” (this beautiful quote is from When Women Were Birds). And this doesn’t only apply to writing, it applies to any way you put your creativity and self out into the public sphere. It applies to our activism. It applies to our daily work. It applies to our relationships. It applies to our art. It applies especially, to our voice.

And the world needs our voices, dear friends. It is aching for us to own ourselves and the world that we envision. Get loud, get proud, and keep fighting for your own voice, keep fighting for justice for all.

Blessed Be.

Ace of Cups & 4 of Wands

January 30, 2017 Nicole Lock

What a kind and happy reading we have today... 🤷‍♀️ In the midst of this injustice, we have answered the call to come together and stand strong in the name of love and what is right. As we rally, plan protests, attend unplanned protests, build marches, call senators, reach out to the people that cross our paths, and whatever else we must do in the future... we are taking our democracy back. We the people are taking our power back. We are not just building a movement of resistance, we are showing the government and the powers that be what we want our democracy to look like. We are showing them what we are made of.

So, take a moment and let yourself dive into the well of the many possibilities of what could be as we continue to stand together in love and solidarity. What would a peaceful, sustainable, and equal world look like? Dream of the world we could build together. Find your place in it. Believe in it! And keep moving towards it in your resistance and in your long term goals. This is only the beginning, remember, we aren't going back to sleep.

My prayers go out to the world today, for all of those suffering and dying at the hands of corruption and greed. It is unacceptable.

Let's take our planet back.

Blessed be ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏻🐾🌲🌏

Son of Cups, Father of Cups, and the Spider

January 27, 2017 Nicole Lock

🌑🌚🌑 I love a new moon. Something about the waning into the void that soothes my soul, comforts my weary mind, and calms my anxious heart. In following the moon, we are reminded that our linear views of reality are manmade: our awareness is brought back to the cyclical nature of this universe. And that is something to be grateful for.

This is a great time to turn inward, to dive into your depths and reconnect with your soul. Get in touch with your creativity, your fantasies, your dreams of a better world. Write them down, dance with them, feed them. Don’t get stuck there though. Like the father of cups and the spider, you must weave what emerges from your inner depths into the work that you do every day. Weave your dreams and visions into your ideas for revolution, for resistance. Weave them into your daily conversations, your actions, and your projects. We need all the creativity and connection to spirit we can possibly get!

And don’t forget, you don’t have to be on the street or employed in a certain career to be an important part of change or part of the resistance. The shifting in consciousness that we seek comes from all of us, in all that we do as humans on this earth. Scientists, artists, gamers, prayers, doctors, custodians, caretakers, you name it… We are all part of this. We are all called upon to infuse our work with the loving, conscious change we seek.

Find time to nourish and connect with your depths. Let them heal and soothe you. Let them inspire and move you.

I believe in the love and magic within us all.

Blessed be dear friends.

10 of Swords, 6 of Pentacles, & The Whale

January 27, 2017 Nicole Lock

The 10 of Swords is all about me these days. I can understand why. It's hard not to fall into spirals of melancholy and expect the worst in these times. Shit, it's only been a freakin week and Trump is certainly coming close to a worst case scenario.

And yet, we must remember that this runs much deeper than Trump and his bullshit. It runs deep into the veins of Americans ready to fight for justice, to stand together, and say enough is enough. Because of this asshole, we are being forced to reach deep into the underbelly of society and wrench out what we've been too comfortable to see.

We will go deeper. And we won't be doing it only for ourselves, quietly ignoring the injustice that doesn't affect us. No. This time we have been forced to witness the many faces of oppression and corruption. We see how much power we have given away. We see how much power has been stolen. We see how power is wielded over our heads. And we see how to take it back.  #organize

We've even been forced to see how we have held onto our own power at the expense of others.

We aren't going back now, so don't get lost in dystopian despair. Trust me, that's what they are hoping for. Instead, focus on going deeper friends. Dive deeper into this revolution, deeper into justice for all, deeper into the truths that live within all of us, and through our coming together in the depths, we will create a deeper democracy.

Keep your heads up. Keep your hearts and minds strong. Our time is now.

Blessed be ✊🏿✊🏻✊🏽
