Hope and belief are powerful tools and the only ones that truly work. Trust me on this one. Hold onto your light, your hope, and your belief in a better future. It’s the only way it will ever manifest. That does not mean staying positive and only looking at the good. Absolutely not. That is a privileged and ignorant stance, that is both selfish and dismissive. For reality and darkness are the nourishment of hope and belief in something better. But for those of us (and the world) who are out of balance in our emotional states, in our relationships, or even with more general issues of justice and power - we will find this moon to be a bit of a challenge. But honestly, it is a challenge we need to meet if we are to better ourselves and our environment. The thing about the lovely, balanced, and harmonious Libra that we often take for granted is the effort and the sacrifice that is required to find that sort of peace. Whether it is a bad habit, time, money, effort, responsibility, creativity - we must look at the ways in which we are being called to let go, to sacrifice for the greater need of balance and harmony, both as individuals and in the public sphere. It comes from deep within ourselves, it requires sacrifice from our bodies and our minds, and it reminds us of our connection to this planet and our bodies. It is messy, nurturing, and wholly personal while also representing the thread that connects us all. It is a holy experience, if we wish it and allow it to be. And it is an extremely magical tool, if you choose to use it. For me, being a witch has a hell of a lot to do with being down and dirty with myself and the planet. For me, being a pagan witch means not aiming to transcend my body or my planet, but to feel my soul deep in my very bones, concentrated in my blood. It means I see and feel my soul in every part of this sacred earth, from pebble to mountain, from raindrops to the ocean, from spider to bear. It means getting comfortable and honoring my physical processes from bleeding to shitting. Seriously. For me, it’s about reveling in the clean, the dirty, and anything inbetween for the love of this planet, my soul and bodily connection to it. So naturally, ritual with menstrual blood holds an immense amount of power and soul connection for me. And I’m definitely not the only one! It isn’t as taboo as our modern culture would have us believe. Cultures have used and still use menstrual blood in ritual as an offering around the world and throughout time. It’s an intuitive way to use it. Why waste it or take it for granted? It has so many uses! For starters, menstrual blood is full of nitrates and nutrients that both plants and animals love. It is a fertilizing offering for the life you give it to. It’s true! Fish love it. Bugs love it. Animals love it. Plants love it. Soil loves it. It seems that humans are usually the only ones who reject its magic. On a particularly messy camping trip years ago, I started my period on the drive into the mountains and didn’t have much to stop the blood from leaking all over my clothes. So I rationed my tampons and swam a lot in the lake. In one particular instance, my partner was fishing and having no luck. I was bleeding down my leg and desperate for the water to save me, so I plunged in and swam around. After I got out, my boyfriend started casting where I had been. A few minutes later, he started catching fish! You know they were coming for the blood. This was before my spiritual reawakening, but even then, I marveled at the magic and reality of my body’s processes. It stuck with me too and when the diva cup was invented, my partner and I discussed using my menstrual blood to fertilize marijuana plants, to paint with, we even thought about using it for my halloween costume. Since I’ve opened back up to the universe and began to take ritual seriously, I’ve kept thinking and thinking about using it: how to use it, when to use it, saving it up for at least the plants... Yet, it wasn’t until last month that I finally saved my blood and performed ritual. Timing is everything. It was actually through my reiki healer that I was given the courage and push from the spirits for this particular ritual. She received the vision of me using my blood during our conversation before I had lain down for energy work. While she worked her magic, my ritual unfolded in astonishing clarity in my mind. I knew exactly where to go. I knew exactly what to do. I knew exactly when to go. And get this, my period started that night. No joke. The synchronicities grew from there. I knew I had to do it on the next full moon, which was exactly a week from the day I started to bleed. This full moon also happened to be in Cancer, where my chiron sits in my chart: the placement from which the wound I was enacting ritual for came from. This full moon also sat with Vesta: the goddess of hearth and home, the goddess of the internal flame and self-regeneration. She represented so much of what I was trying to heal, so that I could be free to be more of myself. This was a cord cutting ritual, to cut the ties that kept me feeling ashamed or fearful of being who I am. The energy, the timing, the spirits, and my body were all aligned. While in ritual, I got a vision of a different version of me across the bank among the trees. She was much darker, more serious, and wild. The flash in her eyes said she was a force to be reckoned with, that she made no apologies for who she was, and she was willing to fight tooth and nail for what she believed in: “pure conviction from her very bones upward,” as Clarissa Pinkola Estés would say. I’m new to intentional witching friends - after 3 years of practicing, these kinds of visualizations were the first and clearest I have ever experienced (both during the ritual and its unfoldment while doing reiki). Menstrual magic is powerful shit. As I was leaving my place of ritual, I got the distinct feeling that I needed to come back for the next full moon and do it again. So of course, I am going to. My period began right on schedule and I should be ready for Friday’s full moon in Leo. Which is again, another blessing to this process because no one knows how to own themselves and be proud to express who they are than Leos. I’m looking forward to it. The effects from the last ritual have been astounding to watch and feel within myself. I honestly have felt more comfortable with myself and all that I am than I can even remember. How do you collect your menstrual blood? Well if you are down with diva cups, they make it a lot easier. I simply pour mine into a mason jar that I keep next to the toilet. If you use pads, tampons, or a sponge soak them in water and use the saturated water for your ritual. If you want to use menstrual blood for your plants, I believe you are supposed to dilute your blood first. I’m no expert, so please google plant care with menstrual blood before testing it out on your plants. As far as what you do with said blood if you aren’t using it in plants is up to you, your guides, your ingenuity and imagination. And hey, if it isn’t for you that is absolutely beautiful and okay too. There are many ways to witch. There are many ways to pray. What I provided above is simply a resource for those who are thinking of using their menstrual blood and my own story of finding it to be extremely useful and sacred. Whenever I read advice that suggests taking our emotions out of the situation, I bristle. I have been told I’m too passionate far too often in my life. I am beginning to see the value in emotional detachment in defending yourself, protecting yourself, and getting through some shitty situations where your emotions will not be valued. I’ve come to realize that my emotions are precious. My sensitive and empathic nature is a gift. My dreaminess knows reality and keeps me grounded. For all my co-sensitives out there, you know that these traits are prayed upon, sometimes by the one’s we trust the most. And this is where the emotional maturity and detachment of the father of cups can help us. If we can learn to deal with those who do not deserve our passion or our emotional natures in a dispassionate matter, we are better able to defend our being and wholeness. Those who will not respect and value our emotions do not deserve them. Essentially, we can use detachment to keep the vampires out. Once safe, we can let it all out, of course. Detachment also allows us to see emotional vampires with a compassion. When they are not able to suck us dry, we can see that they are in need, that they are wounded. You may have noticed that I drew the 3 of cups two days in a row, a very friendly card. I’ve been in, and only occasionally out of, a sort of closed off introvert mode for the last year and a half. For those who know me, you know that is not my norm. I’ve always been an extrovert. In hindsight, I needed that time. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to being a full on extrovert ever again. But lately, I am being drawn back out and into the world of people and friendship, but not in the same way as before. This draw reflects and teaches the wisdom of being able to enjoy, connect, support, and cooperate with others while also remaining balanced in yourself, with your own needs, and purpose. Keeping this balance is tough, as our needs (and the needs of our loved ones) are ever-changing and there isn’t really a set schedule or we can keep or consistent methodology we can apply. Fortunately though, there are some lessons we can keep in mind to help us navigate our complex social landscapes. Motherpeace’s interpretation of the emperor shows him as a rigid, authoritative, defensive, afraid to open up to any other possibility for it may threaten the fixed ideology he has built his world within. I’m not going to lie, while I was doing my shadow work and deep healing, I felt very defensive and it is part of what kept me at arms length from most people. But it was also, the rigid thinking of others that made them hard to bear. The Shaman of Disks is at ease alone and with people. She doesn’t falter either way. Because she is well aware and committed to her dharma (her life’s work and purpose), this knowledge offers her the stability, balance, and leverage to stand strong within her own boundaries, while still offering support, love, and companionship. She knows what is most important to her and the influence of others isn’t going to shake her core, unless of course it is a lesson she needs. Her lesson is much the positive alternative interpretations of the emperor, who is able to stand in his own authority and set boundaries that he and others follow. Truly, the key to balance comes down to having a solid sense of self and an understanding of your own value. And that is something I think I had to go into the dark to find: something I am still finding. Yes, my lack of boundaries were being taken advantage of in the past. But more than that, when I came up against opposition from the people I loved, it would strike me right in the gut. If they didn’t agree with me how could I be right? How could my knowledge and beliefs be worthy if they did not share them or value them? And as I stepped into my magic and spirituality this issue blew up. As many of my co-healers know all too well, there are some people that will never understand. I was looking to others to validate myself and my beliefs. And that is what resulted in the skewed balance that had me run into my own dark cave for a while. For you it may be that you give too much of yourself with little love in return. It may be that you fear opening up to others. Whatever it is, we have to understand that healthy friendships and social interactions require balance and it starts within. My dears, the time has come to do the reaping, to get rid of what keeps us stuck, of what no longer serves us — once and for all. At least as much of it as we can. I know it’s a form of protection, a form of coping, to stay planted, even in soil that is no longer nurturing you. I do it too. Yet, our souls’ yearn for the dirt that will allow us to grow, that will nurture our creativity, and allow us to bloom. To get there we will either have to pick up our roots and move or clean and fertilize the ground we stand in. And if not now, when? How long will you allow old baggage to rot at your feet? Instead, come out of your shell and into your tribe. Let the love and connection of kindreds inspire, heal, and support you. Get back into the groove that your soul most wishes to dance to, the groove that drives you to your higher purpose. That means takings some risks, practicing vulnerability, and opening up to yourself and others. But what else is life in this body for? Really, this life is meant to be enjoyed and shared. It is meant for answering your higher purpose, not to be cogs in a capitalistic, toxic machine. It means finding your own way. Your own mode of transportation. Your own flight pattern. Your own cycle. And then, believing it enough to let it drive you in the right direction. You can do it. All you need is within you. You may just have to do the work of finding it through the toxic waste left by a culture that disenfranchises us from who we are and what we actually need to live a happy life. I don’t know about you all, but that Venus retrograde was a tough experience for me. Retrogrades encourage us to step back and go over things again. Venus, of course, is the planet of love, beauty, pleasure, art, aesthetics — not anything that can be taken lightly. This retrograde brought up many issues of self-doubt, even in the most precious and comfortable of my relationships and especially in my relationship with myself. It had me spiraling with issues of self-worth I thought I’d overcome. I found myself not enjoying my body, my appearance, my writing, or art. All the while I’m wondering where in the hell all of this came from. In hindsight, it was clearly timed with Venus’s retrograde. And while I learned a whole hell of a lot from this review of my life and relationships, I am ready to move on and let go of the baggage that has been holding me back. And wow. How well does this morning's draw reflect exactly that! I am feeling incredibly optimistic this morning and have since Saturday, when I also drew the 6 of swords (with the 5 of cups!). I’m moving up and on, letting go of the past hurts that no longer serve me, but bringing along the wisdom they taught me. The 6 of Swords represents Mercury in Aquarius and the 3 of Cups represents Mercury in Cancer. This bolds well for communicating — aka writing, speaking, sharing, arting. We are being encouraged to bring what we have learned from the struggles of our past into the wisdom, love, and movements we make in the present and in our plans for the future. It is time to take our love and passions seriously, to stop laughing off or escaping from what it is our hearts are being called to do. AND we must open our hearts to our community and allow it to be a space of inspiration, support, and love. I can think of no better analogy for what needs to happen right now. We are all so very different, which is part of our beauty, yet when we come together we can be so much more, each a valuable part of something bigger than ourselves. Let us all offer something to the table, let us stand together for what we can all agree is necessary for our future: a viable, equitable planet - both ecologically and democratically. After awaking to a bloody mess threatening to overflow onto my sheets at 330 in the morning, I couldn’t fall back asleep. In these moments, I turn to meditation to help me back into a resting, calm mindset. As I was grounding and reaching out to the universe, my mind shifted simultaneously to a powerful visualization that came to me from my reiki healer in an especially nurturing session. As I reached out to connect with the energy of the universe, it began flowing back to me and into my heart, where a seed began to sprout. The seed birthed a green stem from my chest that grew into a beautiful, budding pink lily. As it bloomed it turned it’s petals toward me, cocooning me in a shelter of divine and self love. And then I fell asleep… kind of. I was in a sort of lucid dream, I assume (I’ve never been able to do this consciously). It was absolutely clear that I was vibrating with the energy of the divine feminine. I felt it in every cell of my body. And then ideas, truths, feelings of sorts began scrolling through my mind so fast I could barely capture the scrolling into words or concrete memories. It felt like a download of sorts, as my reiki healer would call it. And then I settled into a dreamless sleep that lasted well into the morning. This morning’s draw has me stunned, humbled, and struggling to accept the gift of what must have happened last night. The four of wands is a card of initiation and celebration. It is a turning point, one that requires an advancement in responsibility but also marks significant growth. The two of cups is a union of equals. It can happen between two people, between two parts of ourselves, or even a person with magical energy or divinity. The Cobra represents our inner teacher, wise and connected to the divine. In short, we must choose to listen to our higher selves. It might be easier than facing the grief of letting go of hurt that has become so normalized it’s oddly satisfying to feel its weight in our chest, its stab to our gut, its cement in our steps. The problem is when the sun comes out, when our higher selves call, when the spirit comes along singing — we are stuck. We are trapped by the weight of our pain, trapped beneath the gray, unable to move into the warmth and light, unable to answer our own call to joy. Our ego may still try to convince us it is too scary, too painful to do the work of removing our daggers. That our dreams aren’t worth it. That we don’t deserve them. That we don’t even really want them. Thankfully, our spirit doesn’t give up that easily. We will continually be called, consistently pestered, both within and outside of ourselves to open up to the light. To revel in our true purpose. To remember our connection to the whole. To find our way back to our spiritual homes. As Jessica Macbeth says in the Faeries’ Oracle book, we must “surrender the small everyday self to the larger spiritual self.” I encourage you all to do the necessary shadow work of facing and letting go of your pain. We are one with this planet. We are one as a human race. The bullshit that divides us is manmade, illusions meant to control and separate: to alienate us from our livelihood and each other. And while oppression is absolutely real and placed disproportionately on the backs of people of color, the poor, and women - it does not mean that our connection isn’t real or that our oneness goes away. Does that make any sense? Let me try to elaborate; words have not come easily the last few weeks. Oppression is absolutely real and unjust. People are definitely starving, while others waste and indulge in excess. People are segregated and subjugated because of the color of their skin, their religion, their gender and gender expression, their nationality, their passions and beliefs. People are enslaved, abused, and tortured for incomprehensible reasons. That is absolutely real. Privilege is real. Oppression is real. Thankfully, so is our universal connection. So is our unified compassion. So is our dependency and oneness with this planet and the beautiful, diverse life we share it with. And yet, we are all so different. Which is exactly how it should be, because we each have very necessary roles to play here. Some of us are born screaming and aching about the injustice in the world, even though we have been born into privilege - because we are meant to use our privilege to do something about it. Privilege comes with serious responsibility. Some of us are born fully capable and full of fire to fight, because justice needs warriors. Some of us are born as feelers, whose compassion is a strength that must be practiced and shared, because justice requires empathy. Some of us are born into atrocious conditions for reasons I cannot fathom. And some are born to rise up despite the odds and pull others with them. And we do this because we know deep down, that we are all connected and while life is awfully profane, life is beautiful and every life matters. I think the alienation from our oneness is what allows for people to commit such horrendously selfish and unfeeling acts. I think this alienation works in more subtle ways too, like when we ignore the suffering of others because we are too focused on our own. Regardless, this oneness gives me strength, grants me hope, and puts fire into my heart. I'm inspired and grateful for the work you all do. I am also angry, intolerant, and ready to fight against our alienation and oppression. We all have work to do to understand each other, to make sure that when we stand up for justice, we are standing up for the justice of all. Gestation takes time and although it is hard to be patient and keep trusting, this is a birth we cannot rush. As we wait, we will keep developing ourselves, helping one another out, growing our resources, connection, joy, and empowerment so that the sacred feminine has a clear path to land on. We will continue following our passions, letting our will and our happiness lead the way so that the divine feminine has strong, fertile hearts to grow in. And while that is sometimes necessary and our emotions deserve to be acknowledged, that does not mean these negative feelings/thought patterns must rule or color most of our days or that we must be trapped within them. By practicing presence, we have the power to start telling ourselves a different story when those mental wheels start running toward negativity. This is something the lovers, the buffalo, and the star all deeply understand. The lovers is more than just a couple card, it is a card about choice and ideologies. It is a card that asks us to analyze how we think, what thoughts guide us, and if we truly believe in them. It reminds us of our own ability to CHOOSE to follow what we truly believe. It’s about acknowledging those feelings and choosing to work with them, instead of allowing our minds to use them against us. Hard things happen in life, it is a simple fact of our world. And thank goodness, because the greatest lessons come through facing and healing our pain. This animal reminds us to practice faith that the universe will not throw us anything that we cannot handle. Change and growth require sacrifice: require little deaths for our egos. If we want to change our ideologies, thought patterns, fears, and conditioning that no longer serve us, we must also facilitate and accept the many ego deaths that kind of work brings. More often than not, our ego will not like it one bit and it will throw fits. It will tell us that change is beyond us, that it is too risky, that it is too scary, too hard, too isolating, people won’t like our work, we will die alone and sad, we will fail. Eesh. It is nasty business, this internalized fear and oppression. Fighting our internal predators is no easy task. Sometimes it throws us right into our rockbottom’s. Sometimes it feels like being run to the edge of a cliff. And what do we do from there? Leap. We have a choice. We can surrender to the monstrous parts of our ego and give up. Or we can surrender to the voice urging us to try, to reach, to grow, ultimately to live. Do not forget that our higher self has predators of its own. Get in touch with that internal place of power. Surrender to the truths that roar within. Meditate. Sit in silence. Sit in the dark. And listen. When you hear it, surrender to the higher self and use its tools of acceptance and faith to pull you forward. And when the ego roars in protest, face it with love and compassion, but let it know it is no longer in charge. Urge yourself and your ego to accept that all things have to come to an end including its reign over your mind. And when it persists, have faith in yourself and do it anyway. When I came back another card had fallen from the pile and landed face down across the other two. It was the 3 of swords. I assume the faeries had something to do with this… And I’m a big believer in jumpers and surprise cards anyhow. With such a positive, enthusiastic, and joyful draw without the 3 of swords, what could its addition mean to tell us? Sometimes we can focus too much on the pain of our past, the pain of our present, or even be too worried about pain in the future. We can get so focused on our shadows that we ignore the light. While it is important to face your pain so that it can be healed, it is also important to remain open to the beauty and opportunities of life, joy, and the pursuit of happiness. Pain can often make us close up, close off, and shut down to life and what could/does/will make us happy. It can steer us into fearful traps of depression and anxiety. Heartache, disappointments, and betrayal can fester and ooze into resentment and bitterness that will slowly drain your world of color and vitality. I find this to be true even in following politics. There is a lot of bad and horrible things happening out there right now, but there is so much good too. We must remember to keep hope, to keep fighting for a better world, to elevate the good actions being taken, and seek out opportunities that will allow us to move toward’s a more balanced, harmonious future. I encourage all of us to seek out our enthusiastic and excitable nature today. Let us continue to pursue a life of happiness, love, and gratitude in spite of those who threaten our vitality. I think they will play quite nicely and to our advantage if we channel this energy into fire and water’s common ground: our creativity. It constricts, silences, panics, stagnates. Fear is part of the basic strategy of the Trump administration. They wield it as tool to persuade the public to close our borders to refugees, to expand military spending and force, to put up walls to keep the ‘bad people’ out, to bow to increasing surveillance, to discriminate, to keep oppressing and othering those perceived as different. We the people, are greater than fear. And honestly, I’m simply fucking over it. I’ve lived my entire life in fear of this planet dying beneath our feet: of people, plants, and creatures being poisoned by big business and shit laws that put profit over people. I’ve had nightmares ever since I can remember of humanity being lost to nuclear war. My heart and soul have always been deeply connected to the realities of this world and the future that is being destroyed and stolen from all of us. In the age of information, we all know what is going down and how much is at stake. So don’t try to fucking scare me or the people with threatening more war or terror from outside forces. Our country and what our corrupt government facilitates across the world and at home, is terror. Whether it’s ecological, political, economical, cultural, militarized, or whatever new form they can come up with, our own government is a face of terror. Maybe it always has been. I can certainly think of some good arguments there (the genocide of native people, slavery, war). And now they want to stop immigrants and refugees from coming to America? We think we can turn our backs on the war torn people of the middle east when we fucking started this mess? I’m just over it. I’m over having fear used against us. We are all fucking terrified. And none of what this administration is trying to do is making anyone safer. It’s more like it is catapulting us right into the worst case scenario. I propose that we revamp how we cope with fear, how we talk and think about fear, how we use fear on personal and collective levels. A good place to start is with the Empress. What path would she take in these times and in response to fear? Loving, sensual, and deeply connected to the planet, the empress teaches us to be fierce in the defense of what we love, who we are, what we live for, and those around us. She is the feminine force humanity has been sorely missing through this atrocious patriarchal era. She does not fight out of greed or selfish preservation. When she responds to fear, she transforms it into a reason to fight for love, for a nurturing and viable planet, for people and animals alike, for the right to create harmony and abundance for all. Fear would not constrict her, but cause her to open her heart wider, to let more in so that she is able to include the diverse needs of the planet and people in her fight. The best reaction we can have to fear is coming together. This fight is not individual nor can it be. This is fight is for all of us. When you feel fear, remember to reach out and connect. I used to get lost in the idea that the balance this card called for was between democrats and republicans, but no. It is balance in the voices of the few and the many. It’s an intersectional outlook and a fair distribution of power, not a corporate coup full of billionaires and payed politicians to put corporate interests over the people. I came out of grad school swinging at all three. I was simply done with anyone and anything stifling the way I prefer to write, what I prefer to read, and even what I do with my days. I sincerely thought when I finished my degree that I’d finally be free. I thought the words would flow, that my creativity would come rushing back to me, that all I needed was the absence of an institution over my head. Instead, I travelled deeper into a long, dark night of the soul. And thank goodness for that. What I didn’t realize, even if I understood the concept intellectually, was that the structures I felt the need to rebel against still existed within me. You know, that whole internalization of oppression thing… My internal predator, my ego, my demons, still clung to ideas that made me feel guilty and ashamed about the person my higher self was calling me to be. Conventionality still held power through conditioning, through shame, guilt, and doubt. I had to set out on a journey of unfolding, dismantling, and seeing what was behind the old walls that kept me trapped. It has been a journey of unlearning, of facing those demons, of clearing away the unnecessary. And it’s been a long one. What does this have to do with the Ace of Disks and the Emperor? After dismantling the old power structure, you have to build a new one for yourself. It’s taken me some time, but it is clear that I need to build new webs of internalized understanding when it comes to authority, structure, and ownership. I need to hand the reigns over to myself. I need to stand in my own authority. Create my own structure. Take ownership of all that I am and all that I seek to create. Especially now. There are times when we have become selfishly and detrimentally invested in the material. There are times when we use structure to hide. And those are the times in which we need to give our attention and energy to our inner child: to express, play, and be joyful for its own sake. It is far too often that we hold ourselves back when we should be letting our creativity and expression flow with child-like abandon. Is it fear, greed, or comfort that keeps you from sharing your truths, your feelings, your work, your expression? Is it something else? Are you trading your freedom for security? Maybe you choose to seek satisfaction in your job, things, and/or bank account instead of through your joy, play, and creativity. Maybe merging, sharing, and balancing where you find your satisfaction and value is exactly what is being called for. Maybe clinging to structure is exactly what you need to channel your creativity forward. Ask yourself, your higher self, what your goals are. What is most important to you? Make a list. Now, ask yourself what you need to get there. Is it more work? More structure? More play? More freedom? Make sure that you aren’t getting stuck in either extreme. It is possible to enjoy your work and make room for play within a structured environment. It is possible to lend structure to child-like abandon and joy. I know it’s also hard for many of us to enjoy or even feel happiness right now, because we fear so much for our earthly and material well being. Between the suffering planet, violence in the world, economic instability, and personal health there is a lot to be worried about. For you, I wish you the freedom to feel into your joy when it erupts. I wish you the freedom to find time to reconnect to and cultivate it. I promise it won’t make anything worse. I promise that it will heal you in ways that you cannot imagine.
